When Fall Color Peaks in the Blue Ridge

The most common question we get in September is some version of when should we come for the leaves. The honest answer is that it depends less on the calendar than on how high up you are willing to drive.
Color moves downhill
Elevation drives the whole thing. The highest peaks in the region sit above 6,000 feet and turn first, usually in the last week of September. From there the color works its way down the slopes over roughly a month, arriving in the valleys and around Asheville in late October and sometimes holding into the first days of November.
The practical result is that a single weekend can be too early in one place and perfect twenty minutes up the road. If you arrive and the valley still looks green, drive up. If the peaks are already bare, drive down.
Rough timing by elevation
- Above 5,000 feet: late September into the first week of October
- Between 3,000 and 5,000 feet: the first two weeks of October, which is the busiest stretch
- Below 3,000 feet, including Asheville and most valley towns: mid October into early November
Where to drive
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the obvious answer and it earns it, but treat it as a series of destinations rather than one long drive. Pick two or three overlooks, plan a short walk at each, and accept that you will not cover much ground.
Weather closes sections of the Parkway without much notice in late autumn, so check the National Park Service status page the morning you go rather than the night before.
Going on a weekend
October weekends are the busiest of the year here. Parking at the popular overlooks fills early, and the two lane roads leading to them back up behind it.
Being on the road by eight in the morning changes the day completely. The light is better, the pullouts are open, and you are heading home while everyone else is still looking for somewhere to park.
