How a Lake Weekend Actually Goes

People book a lake house imagining the water and then spend the weekend figuring out how to get onto it. A little planning ahead of time is the difference between a good trip and a lot of driving around.

The shape of the place

Smith Mountain Lake runs through the Blue Ridge foothills in long fingers rather than one open basin. All that folding gives it hundreds of miles of shoreline, which is why so many houses sit on quiet water even though the lake is busy.

It also means distances are longer than a map suggests. Two houses a mile apart across the water can be a twenty minute drive around. If you are meeting people, check the driving route rather than the crow flies one.

Getting on the water

Renting a pontoon is the default and it is worth booking before you arrive, especially for a summer weekend. Marinas around the lake handle rentals, and Bridgewater Plaza is the usual starting point for anyone who has not been before.

If you have never driven a boat, a pontoon is the forgiving choice. Slow, stable, hard to embarrass yourself in, and it holds everyone plus a cooler.

What a private dock changes

A house with its own dock changes the pace of the trip more than any other feature. Swimming happens whenever someone feels like it rather than as an outing, and a rented boat has somewhere to sit overnight instead of going back to the marina.

It is the single thing guests mention most in reviews of our lake homes, and the thing people wish they had filtered for when they did not.

Beyond the water

• Smith Mountain Lake State Park, for a swimming beach and easy trails when you want a day off the boat
• Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway, about an hour away and best in spring or October
• Downtown Lynchburg and the Bluffwalk, a straightforward dinner and a walk

When to come

June through August is lake season, when the water is warm enough that nobody hesitates before getting in. That is also when houses book earliest.

May and September are the better trade if you are flexible. The water is still comfortable, the lake is quieter on a Saturday, and the foothills behind it are at their best for hiking. October is beautiful and cold in the water, so plan it as a leaf trip that happens to be on a lake.
