Gerton sits in the Hickory Nut Gorge, a fourteen mile canyon cut through the Blue Ridge that also holds Bat Cave, Chimney Rock, and Lake Lure. It is small and quiet, and it is about twenty five miles from downtown Asheville.
The reason to stay here is what is behind it. Roughly twelve miles of trails climb out of the gorge to grassy summits at Bearwallow Mountain, Blue Ridge Pastures, and Wildcat Rock.
